Ideas, insight and dialogue at the Centre
During the spring semester of 2024, the Centre held its first anti-racist seminar series. This three-part series emerged after PGRs and community partners called for more opportunities to platform their work, exchange ideas, and draw attention to issues that are often overlooked in academic spaces.
As part of Migration Matters 2024, we held a public showcase to share our recent work within the Centre Archive. We were also joined by The Lit Collective who presented their creative anthology and video.
In April 2024 we invited artists, activists and community members to a special evening of talks and performances that did take love seriously as an essential feature of social justice. Together we explored what love actually means, how love can become a core part of our activism, and how love can help us confront the major issues of our time both locally and internationally.
At the Centre for Equity and Inclusion, we recently collaborated with PgR student Macole Lannaman during Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month on an event called In The Cut – Celebrating The Black Barbershop as a space for healing at Sheffield Students’ Union.
SHARE (Sheffield Anti Racist Education) is a group of Sheffielders working together to advance anti-racist education in our city. SHARE support initiatives to decolonise every sector of education.SHARE is very pleased to offer two workshops to help postgraduate researchers (PGRs) of colour to develop key skills relating to their PhD programmes.
Professor Ngugi wa Thiong’o recently participated in a two-day symposium hosted by the Centre for Equity and Inclusion in collaboration with the African Voices Platform and The Racial Justice Network. The event occurred at Utopia Theatre’s Creative Hub and the University of Sheffield, honouring his significant contributions.
Inspired by the work of Lola Olufemi, we invited researchers, artists, activists and community members to present their own ideas about the ‘Otherwise’ at our first public conference.
